Coffee By Design
Margaret P. Driver
The history of Portland is filled with ordinary people doing extraordinary things, answering the call for justice. Our “Spirits Alive” Barrel-Aged Coffee honors Portland’s subterranean celebrities and their stories as preserved by the Spirits Alive non-profit which maintains the Eastern Cemetery.
Fifth in our series, we remember Margaret P. Driver. There isn’t much information about her, but there is enough to assume that she was born into slavery then freed. She came to Maine from Georgia with her husband. It is noted she was illiterate but nonetheless, accomplished great work as an abolitionist which was acknowledged on the Freedom Trail Plaque: “one who campaigned against slavery, provided safe- houses, and assisted runaways on their journey to freedom.”
This limited edition release is a blend of natural beans from GERA Estate in the Djimma region of Ethiopia and fully washed ones from the Ngozi region of Burundi. Aged for over 60 days in a Merrymeeting Rum barrel from Three of Strong Spirits, the coffee is then finished at a medium roast level. The infused beans have no alcohol in them. We taste notes of vanilla, oak and cinnamon.
Flavor Notes:
Cinnamon + Oak + Vanilla
