Elizabeth Widgery Thomas
The Spirits Alive Series celebrates Portland’s rich history and the Spirits Alive non-profit which maintains the Eastern Cemetery.
Elizabeth Widgery Thomas’s home was considered a “safe house” for fugitive slaves as she and her husband participated in the Portland Anti-Slavery Society. She was active in women’s rights and hosted the likes of Lucy Stone, the first woman in the U.S. to graduate from college (Oberlin in Ohio) and suffragette, Susan B. Anthony. The Widgery Thomas house was burned down in the Great Fire of 1866. We honor Elizabeth in the fourth of our Spirits Alive barrel-aged series. This limited release coffee was aged in whiskey barrels from Maine Craft Distilling for over 60 days. To infuse the beans with flavors from the barrel, the barrels are rotated daily. Once roasted, the beans have no alcohol in them. We taste notes of oak, cinnamon and butterscotch.
The coffee is a medium roast blend of two single origin African coffees: Rwanda Urugori Washed “Womens Crown” from Gasharu Coffee Farms and a Grade 1 Ethiopia Natural from GERA Estate.
We have only 30 bags of this limited release coffee available online, so when it’s gone it’s gone.
